Making impact investing feel like smart business, not charity
CHALLENGE: The UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals require massive private capital to succeed, yet investors lacked visibility into local SDG opportunities and credible market intelligence. The UNDP wanted to bridge this gap by surfacing verified investment opportunities, but the platform needed to feel credible to mainstream investors while staying true to the UN's role as a neutral facilitator. MY ROLE: As design lead, I shaped the platform's core experience, working closely with the research team to align diverse stakeholder needs, defining interaction patterns and information hierarchy, and delivering a system built to scale across global markets. I translated insights from institutional investors, ESG strategists, development economists, and UNDP country teams into design principles: data-first storytelling, trust through transparency, and access to local expertise. PROCESS: We interviewed a wide spectrum of stakeholders to understand what investors needed to act confidently and what the UN needed to maintain neutrality. I led the synthesis of these perspectives into a platform that balances economic clarity with social mission, designing interfaces that let users evaluate risks and returns while understanding local development needs and policy landscapes. Every decision, from data presentation to navigation, was guided by the need to make SDG investment feel like everyday business, not philanthropy. SOLUTION: The final platform is clean, intuitive, and structured for both exploration and decision-making. It combines the approachability of a social impact site with the trustworthiness of a professional financial tool, featuring economic data, tangible case studies, and direct access to local experts. The design scales across regions and continues to evolve as UNDP country offices add new opportunities.
Result: Sustainable investing at scale
"UNDP's SDG Investor Platform provides the critical data, insights and tools that investors need to drive new levels of capital towards the Sustainable Development Goals." — Achim Steiner, Then Administrator of the United Nations Development Program 2025
Since launch, the platform helped catalyze roughly US $1 trillion in SDG-aligned investments (2025), has expanded to 400+ investment opportunities across 40+ countries, with more added regularly by UNDP offices worldwide. The work received a UX Design Award nomination and continues to support a growing ecosystem of sustainable investing, transforming a fragmented landscape into a navigable tool and shifting SDG investment from abstract ideal to everyday action.
